Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Watch The Throne” Album Review by CoryLavel

Yesterday I walked into Best Buy and purchased the deluxe version of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Watch The Throne” Album for $12.99 . I must say this is one the most creatively packaged Albums I have ever seen, with its fold out box, which looks like gold, it's makes you feel like your holding something magical, as if you are holding Willy Wonkas Golden Ticket, and you are about to be granted full access to all the candy in the factory. Once you open the Album you see the American Flag, and two pictures, on the left Jay-Z looking like half man half beast & on the right Kanye as the same. On the bottom of the fold out you see, pictures of Angels in black and white. There is so much art and detail on this Album, that it really stands out and begs for attention, as it looks like nothing else that is on the shelf in the stores. By looking at the first weeks numbers it's pretty clear that people are intrigued by what's in the mysterious golden box and the album has sold close to 700,000 in its first week. When the Album first starts you hear track one, "No Church in the Wild" with a lackluster hook sung by, "Frank Ocean." Frank Ocean sings one note, similar to how he sings his one hit Novicane. Overall production of music on the Album is typical Kanye West style elegant, with heavy bass, melodic vocals, mixed with sampled soul singers, like the song "Otis." Kanye is his usual self on the Album and you can really hear his growth, and how he has changed his style from his College Dropout Album. Kanye even elludes a little bit about his mom on the album and about having a son one day and how he would raise him. Overall Kanye shines on this Album and it feels as though he produced every track on this project as most of the songs use samples of other works, even partnering up with Beyonce on the track "Lift Off."In this song Beyonce sounds like she is really trying to lift-off a plane with her voice belting out the chorus so strong. My favorite song on this Album may surprise you, it's track number three called, "N@$gas in Paris", where sample of comedian Will Ferrells voice is used for comedic timing within the song. They rap about balling so hard and having so much money. It's a pretty common thread for rappers to brag about the cars they have or money they stack up. Jay-Z has a few witty lines in the album, but any fan that knows his story or his music, can hear the common things he says on this album and can trace them back to his other albums. Jay-Z raps about having a lot of money (said that before) he raps about his Dad not being there for him (said that before) he raps about his nephews death (said that before) he raps about having the baddest girl in the game(said that before) he raps about never going to jail (said that before too). In midst of all of his recycled raps, he finds his groove and finds a few witty things to say, while staying true to his Brooklyn roots while rapping about the soul music he used to hear growing up as a child that influenced his style (he said that before too). So is this album a classic? Right now, not yet. They have made major strides and broken a few records with album Sales, but when you listen to Watch the Throne, think back to "The Blueprint Albums", think back to "The College Dropout" & "Graduation" and you will see those are classics that many people will and have played for years. Will Watch the Throne be like that? On a scale of 1 to 10 right now I give this album a 7. It has 14 songs on it and out of those 14 songs I really like about 5 of them. I say if your a fan of these guys get the album, if nothing else it will look cool on your shelf at home.
