To explain my man Noxx and the Borderline Psycotics, you go to the beginning, the essence, the heart of what rap truly is and what we, as community, have forgotten… Art, its just art man. A rap song is music, no different than Beethoven or Stevie Wonder’s “songs in the key life”. No different than a painting, a sculpture, or any work of literature since the beginning of mankind.
All that means is, #1, its all personal; I like what I like, you like what you like, Period. There’s no right or wrong. Right now, somewhere out there someone is buying a damn Lawrence Welk album and if you don’t know who that is, point proven. Who would I be to tell that person that their music doesn’t soothe their soul or invoke feelings of nostalgia and warmth? How many songs remind you of your “Mama,” or a song that got you through some pain? How about the songs that remind you to be strong? You know that joint you put on, on the way to work, to get hype for the day? Even if I hate that mother f*****, (lol) you have the right to love it. In the song “BabyI’m a Star,” Noxx says it all in the line, “none of these rap niggas can stand me, my daddy, said nigga you be yourself you don’t make music for fans, you make it for your self, the fans take away what they can for they self…” With all the shit people talk about record sells and radio play, the radio and pop culture really is aimed at 12 year olds. This is the market, grown folks would not have made “laffy taffy” a hit… Its kids music; look at 106 and park on BET, ain’t no grown folk in the audience. So as an artist did Beethoven, or Picasso give a damn if the teeny boppers liked day like there work? #2… Well 2 is deep. See now you have all these bloggers and “Internet Einstein’s”(who having forgot point #1) really believe that their top-ten is THE top-ten and on top of that MONEY has become what we measure success by. Which would make “Vanilla Ice” one of the best right? “Ice Ice baby” sold big, remember?
