Bio

Born in Monmouth County, NJ, A.R. formerly known as Lex was surely a blessing yet to be discovered. The first two years of his life, he spent with his mother, whom at the time was widely known in the streets for never backing down from a fight, beating up various boyfriends, and some drug usage. A lot of the time he was left with his older sister, who took on the responsibilities of raising and looking after her younger brother, even though she was still really a child herself. But due to the constant drug abuse and street running, A.R., born Alejandro Morenzo Reddman, and his sister were taken from his mother, separated, and sent to different foster homes. “I think I was 4 years old when me and my sister were finally reunited in the same foster home, and she never left my side after that. I remember I kept getting sent back to the foster home because my attitude and temper were so bad, and the foster parents said I was too violent and uncontrollable. I mean, when me and my sister were separated, I felt like the only person who ever really cared about me had been taken away from me and it was all my mothers’ fault. I just didn’t know how to cope.” For the next two years, A.R. and his sister stayed with a new foster mother, who managed to do the bare necessities required to raise a child. “Man…that’s why I feel the movie Antoine Fisher so much…that’s pretty much how my life was starting out, except I had the worst temper ever. I remember plenty of times I got my ass whipped, sometimes just because she was mad at her own daughter. So, she would take it out on me and my sister, but mostly me because I was so rebellious.” Many a day passed by as A.R. and his sister received broken promise after broken promise from their mother that she was going to come see them and get them back, and they would spend days sitting on the front porch, bags packed, waiting, sometimes all day, but she would never show up. Finally, one day at the age of 6, his mother actually showed up, but with a social worker that informed him and his sister that they were going on a vacation to Florida, and that was the last time A.R. saw his mother.

Luckily for A.R. and his sister, they were adopted within the family and were given a fresh start at life. A.R.’s newly found family recognized that he had some “problems” but they whole heartedly worked with him to help him adjust to having a better life. They were old school, but had strong family values. Values based on strong family foundations and traditions such as going to church. It was at this point in his life that his newly adoptive mother first began to push him towards music. “I remember when I first told my mom that choir was for girls, but what could I do? Lol. Her roof, her rules. But, had she not pushed me into getting more proactive in the church I would’ve never known I had been blessed with the gift of being musically inclined. That was really the only thing I ever liked about going to church, besides the girls that attended. It’s where I first found my love for music.” The years began to pass and A.R. began to teach himself how to play piano by ear. He even taught himself to play the drums. By the time he was in high school, he was beginning to develop vocally and began participating in various groups and dabbling with freestyles. “When I was coming up we were listening to everything from DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince to the Wu-Tang to Scarface, Too Short, Snoop, etc., as well as R&B groups like Shai, H-Town, Boyz II Men, Jodeci…even some gospel heavyweights like John P. Kee, Reggie Hammond, BeBe and CeCe, and the list goes on. And my father had plenty of old school greats like Sam Cook, B.B. King, Natalie Cole, etc. So I think I have a well blended musical background.”

In 2002, A.R. received his first real break with up and coming R&B group sensation Thug City, and in the summer of 2003 the group dropped its first underground smash hit single “.45” under Universal Records which landed them their first live performance ever at the Crown Stadium opening up for Cash Money’s Birdman and Mannie Fresh. Almost 2 years later, they followed up with their first commercial radio single “Proposition” which gained even more spins than “.45”. But in the summer of 2006, right after the groups’ last performance at Afram Fest in Norfolk, VA, the Thug City project came to a close. “Man…that was all I had going for myself, I was actually living my dream and then, BAM! It was over, just like that. We (Thug City) knew why, but it was just too unbelievable that the ride was over.”

After the aftermath, A.R. was lost for awhile. Without music, he had no particular direction in which to head, because music was his compass. “I went through some rough times…living different places, never really being stable. I was getting caught up in the dumbest of situations….just living my life with no plan.” Finally, he had had enough and decided to pick his life up and put it back together. Now, after taking time off from pursuing his place in the industry, this writer/producer/ brings to you his first solo single, the “Like A Star” freestyle off his upcoming free mix tape, “Interlude”, which he has yet to set a release date for. “Really, I just had to take time to absorb what had really happened and find a release through the music again. To this day, I still have people telling me how much they were feeling the groups’ singles that were released, but at the same time asking what happened. So I decided to shed a little light on the situation by doing the [Like A Star] freestyle.” From the sound of things, A.R. is back and strictly business and this is only the beginning…

Rappers Stealing Images...What Happened To Originality??

Posted on July 18, 2010 at 11:32am 0 Comments

First off, let me say thank you Freeway for standing up and doing something about the infringement on your name. All too often, rappers are prone to "stealing" a name all the way down to image likeness just to use as a "gimmick" to blow themselves up. Let's keep it real though. Mr. M. I. Ya-yo is a prime example of how infringements are used to catapult one's career to the next level. From the shaved head and beard down to them "thangs" that he moves in the streets. Not to take anything away…
